Mis “Piensos” on the George Clooney engagement

Sigh...

Sigh…

Upon learning that George Clooney got engaged recently to international lawyer Amal Alamuddin, three things came to mind:

 1. Who is this mystery woman??? (¿Y qué tiene que las otras ex-novias no tuvieron?)

2. Remember that old saying “Más pronto cae un hablador que un cojo,” or “never say never”?  Yet again it proves to be true.

3. I really have to return to my blog so I can vent this out properly in Spanglish on a worldwide open platform.

So here I am, back in the only place where I could fully express my feelings y piensos on this all too important subject (at least for me) and hope that my four fieles lectores/as have not lost faith in me and the Life in Spanglish blog.

(Thank you for your patience. I promise to be here at least once a week.)

As for the future Mrs. George Clooney, let me tell you, I’m impressed. Not that anybody would ask, but since it can’t be me who is the object of his affections, at least I’m happy she’s a smart, accomplished, cultured and successful woman who seems to suit George quite well.

Ms. Alamuddin is 36 years old, was born in Beirut, studied in Oxford and NYU, speaks 3 languages (Arabic, English and French) is an international lawyer who among her clients has defended Julian Assange of WikiLeaks (que tal?) and serves as special counsel to the United Nations and former UN Secretary Kofi Annan. Not too shabby!

After the initial google searches, I found she also has a quirky fashion sense when it comes to shoes.

In few pictures existing in the web so far, she is wearing interesting shoe combos, something I can appreciate. Some of them are kind of weird, but in one of her paparazzi shots she has some sort of eclectic oxford shoes, and I just happen to LOVE oxford shoes. Nada de glam, nada de sexy mama, just really strange and cool black and white shoes with laces. Y sólo por eso, dije, OK, me cae bien… (Nobody ever accused me of being too shallow, just a little bit.) I expect she will now be hounded wherever she goes and we will probably get to see more of that unusual fashion sense.

Yes, I love a good oxford shoe. The future Mrs. George Clooney has similar tastes.

From In Style website. George Clooney and Aluma. I like her oxford shoes- and that's all I need para que me caiga bien.

As for Mr. Clooney, pues no que no tronabas pistolita. After years of saying he was not the marrying type, I guess it was a matter of timing and finding a jet setting-like minded human activist to settle down with. ¿O será que ya se cansó de darle vuelo a la hilacha? At 52, he’s no spring chicken, but he looks as handsome as ever.

Yes, para mí el George Clooney es especial,  and the sentimental fool that I am, I am happy for him. Event though I’ve never met him, we go way back to our “Facts of Life-Roseanne-Sisters-ER” TV days and he has always, always been my most favorite. (He has an upcoming birthday on May 6th).

As for the rest of us, we’ll always have that wonderful little gem of a commercial that makes us wonder, what if I ever got married to George? I’ve posted it before and here it is again for your viewing pleasure.

Dream a little dream, baby.

La Gwyneth here, la Gwyneth there, la Gwyneth everywhere.

She's everywhere these days.

She’s everywhere these days.

Bueno, it had to happen sooner or later.

My dysfunctional love/hate relationship con la Gwyneth Paltrow has reached new heights. I really don’t know how to help myself…Somebody stop me from buying/consuming all the magazines and books where my nemesis slash bff Gwyneth is on the cover, por favor.

This month was particularly bad. She was voted the World’s Most Beautiful Woman on the cover of People so there I go and ahí te van 5 dólares. I wouldn’t go THAT far as to say she is the world’s most beautiful woman, pero who cares I bought it anyway. She had another cover this May for Harper’s Bazaar, so there go another 5 pesitos. And I finally found her new book at Costco and succumbed to it. Lo veia en el Barnes & Noble pero me dolía el codo pagar los 32 bucks, so I just waited for the $17.69 deal at Costco.

I’ve subscribed to her goop.com ever since she started it, I think she’s the celebrity I’ve mentioned most on this blog, I follow her on Twitter, la veo en el Hola, me sé toda su vida, o sea, in a nutshell, soy su groupie.

And yet, when I see her on TV, when she’s giving an interview with her snobby upscale vocabulary, cuando parece que she’s perfect and makes you feel somewhat inadequate for not being all perfect all the time, or when she’s wearing those weird see through dresses like at the recent premier for IronMan, de veras que my inner voice says, Urgh! No te aguanto. Ya bájale Gwyneth. No manches.

A dichotomy indeed.

Pero no me considero de los multiples haters que tiene en la vida (hay muchos que la detestan), ni tampoco me atrevería a dejarle un negative comment en su blog.

Most of the time, I’ll admit that she does inspire me, she does make me want to be a better cook and a healthier person. Like the time she said that the Vitamix would change your life and I believed her. (Yes, I bought it, and yes it has, and now I can’t live without it.)

Her new cookbook is a beautiful set of photos and recipes that I’m reading (and enjoying) cover to cover. Just by looking at the pictures I feel good, like I want to try them all and host a party or something. Tiene muy buen gusto, I’ll give her that. All the images are gorgeous, the fonts and the design are simple, the colors are bright. Está muy padre el libro.

I can’t post any of the images from the book because of her very clearly written copyright notice de que pobre de nosotros si hacemos upload anything in the book without her permission. No quería poner ninguna receta sin permiso, of course. I do have a queja, though: hay una receta que le llama EASY POSOLE. With an S.

Ahi si me dieron ganas de escribirle y decirle que where I come from, el POZOLE se escribe con Z. It’s POZOLE! Y que lleva some sort of meat. (She does a meatless easy “posole” with hominy y dice que le puedes poner rabanitos y aguacate to garnish it.)

So if you want to check the book out, vayan a la Costco to get a better deal. And if you’re like me, on Thursday you’ll be reading her latest installment on goop.com, a ver con que nos sale ahora. I’m not even a Mommy blogger and I want to get everything she recommends for the kids! I don’t have a superstar budget and I’m browsing through all her exclusive Goop fashion designer selections as if I were going to buy. Te digo, no tengo remedio.

Los argentinos están de moda este 2013: El Papa Francisco y ahora la Reina Máxima

Have you noticed? Something is happening with los argentinos this year. They’ve been all over the news, and with happy occasion.

Last month it was the election of Pope Francis, the first Latin American Pope, aka Jorge Bergoglio who hails from Buenos Aires and who has made a fabulous first impression so far.

Otro que se la pasa making news, is the world’s best soccer player, according to everybody who knows el futbol, Lionel Messi. I don’t have to tell you how electrifying it is to watch him score un gol con el Barça.

And on Tuesday, April 30th, Máxima Zorreguieta, born in Argentina, pero Princesa de Holanda por casamiento, will become Queen of the Netherlands. Her mother in law, Queen Beatrix abdicates on behalf of her son Willem Alexander, who married Máxima in 2002. She speaks perfect Dutch, has a masters in finance and is extremely popular and photogenic, so much that she won over the entire population of the Netherlands. They love her. So now there’s a Dutch queen from Buenos Aires, how about that?

I must confess I read Hola Magazine quite regularly, y no me da pena decirlo. I’ve always said “el chisme es cultura” and there’s no greater guilty pleasure and empty calorie entertainment than this particular chisme and “notas del corazón” magazine from Spain. (Compro la versión española de la revista porque la de México me da flojera, con todos los public service announcements y propaganda a favor de la Gaviota Peña Nieto y los Televisos… but I digress.)

So yes, I’m an avid reader of the royalty gossip and love the pictures, and one of my favorites has always been la Máxima. De todas las princesas consortes plebeyas (Letizia from Spain, Mette Marit from Norway, Mary from Denmark) in my opinion, she is the best. She always smiles, she always looks happy, she has great taste in fashion and she can rock a hat like nobody’s business. Bravo Máxima!

You can imagine Hola is having a field day with this news and are giving it wall to wall coverage on their website http://www.hola.com  and on the sister version from Argentina www.hola.com.ar.

Here are a few pix from their websites (credits from the magazine for each) on Máxima’s fashion throughout the years.
