It’s always so cool to see a friend of yours featured on the front of the LA TIMES Sunday Calendar section. (This does not happen muy seguido asi que ya se imaginarán el gusto que nos da.) Especially when she’s a great friend like Yarel, who hosts her own TV show, Reventón on Mun2, plus DJ’s at KSSE Super Estrella, plus currently makes time to get her Master’s degree at USC. Yes she is beautiful and smart, thank you very much!
I have a hard copy from the Sunday LA Times (10/4) to keep at home, but she also sent a link so I’ll add it here. You should really take a look at it. It’s called “Latino personalities juggle a bilingual stage” and features Yarel and the Chicas Project: Yasmin and Crash.
Yarel also sent a link to a CNN feature by Tomas R. Jimenez, a top scholar from Stanford University, who researches what it means to be Hispanic in the US today. Su pieza editorial te hace pensar en lo “unique” que es nuestra comunidad y en todo lo valioso que somos para este pais. Immigration debates notwithstanding, todos tenemos algo que aportar.
Just in time for Hispanic Heritage Month, all of these media outlets are again fascinated with our lingo and our domain of Spanglish, it kind of makes you proud to speak it. Thank God we are moving past the “pocho” stereotype…poquito a poco, pero ahi la llevamos.
